They generally made some major changes that actually make the characters I LoTR look kind of stupid in hindsight. Like the whole implied "Gandalf and Company more or less recognise Sauron and his attempt to return to power" thing and yet they are completely caught off guard and first have to do a whole lot of research(?) when he actually does stage a comeback some decades later.
