It's possible Tex was another fragment from the beginning, which could make sense.

It's also possible that when the original Tex died, the AI (Church) simply created a fragment based off of Tex, so the "ghost" Tex is actually just another AI fragment.

Ditto-ing the best theory ever movement here. That's something I hadn't considered. I've been working off of Tex being fully human.

I can't entirely take credit for it. It came from a forum discussion.

Also proposed was the idea that the human Church was the mind that the Alpha was based off of and it was hidden in his armor without the knowledge of either. The AI was essentially dormant until the human Church was killed and then the Alpha, still believing itself to be Church, naturally assumed he was a "ghost".
