No-o, I think it's a much older ideal - Asians (at least the Japanese as far as I know) can also be naturally rather pale, though a different shade than Northern Europeans. It's like the tanned ideal over here; we can be a rather nice shade of brown, and it's seen as healthy and beautiful, but it's a different shade from the naturally darker hues down at the southern parts of the continent.

I tried to Google this shortly after writing my comment, but there were only discussions of the ideal rather than historical facts. Maybe my parameters weren't right, but I would definitely be interested in seeing how far back the ideal goes.

Come to think of it though, yes, the pale skin ideal could be a sign of status as it was in historical Europe, but the rounder eyes definitely come from looking Western being ideal.

Do you think so? Couldn't it just be that a rare feature like that has been idealized? I mean, there are Japanese with naturally rounded eyes. I've got the impression of slanted, almond-shaped eyes being rare signs of beauty in certain times in history here in Europe, but I'm not sure how correct I am. I've certainly read beauties described as such in silly romance novels and the like. I mean, we don't use "round" as a positive descriptor of eyes, do we?

If this is true, I would say that part of the cause is exoticism. The same could definitely be said of the romance novels. You might even find "exotic" used to describe the beauty of a person who has those eyes.

Being as how most of those of European decent have rounder eyes, that feature is simply viewed as default, at least in white American culture. It's an unmarked descriptor that doesn't need to be stated. "Slanted," "Asian," or similar descriptors need to be stated in order for there to be an understanding of the eyes being a shape other than the default. I'm not defending this way of thinking, but this is the way things tend to work. Just as a descriptor of skin color or ethnicity is needed in order to get past the default of "white" in many people's minds.

Well, it's been quite a few years since I've read one of those books. Mostly they were fiery redheads, I think.

Oh, I agree, but that's not exactly what I meant. It's more like when we want to describe eyes as special and beautiful, I think that we usually also describe them as unusual; we use a shape that is uncommon among us, something to further set the person apart. Just look at Harry Potter; his eyes are actually described as big and almond-shaped in canon!

I'm not saying that there aren't unhealthy ideals in Eastern Asia; those sort of ideals exist everywhere (how big part of the population look like super models, for example). All I'm saying is that the particular ideals of large eyes and white skin may not don't stem from some sort of idealization of Northern European looks, but have a longer history. There are other things people do to look more "western"; there are people who would want that (I can't imagine why, honestly). I just don't think these two are part of that.

Oh god. Those words.

You may be right, I may be right, or it may be a combination of our two arguments. I know that I'm still tempted to argue my side of it, but I have to admit that you do bring up some good points. It was an interesting discussion nonetheless.

Oh god. Those words.

I know. I'm now instinctively suspicious of red-headed women in fiction...

It was an interesting discussion nonetheless.

It was. Thank you for the opportunity.
