if you blog about something you've read somewhere, you usually tend to give a link to the source so that all sides win: your readers can go there and read the whole story, and the original author gets more views. It's really a win-win.

Well, I'm certainly not arguing that people shouldn't credit the creators of the fanart they use in their icons. It's absolutely the best solution that they do. I just don't think that they've wronged someone, or committed a crime if they don't.

On the other hand, I constantly see uncredited fanart used in icons, and even when I ask for the sauce, some of the iconmakers reply with "dunno, found with photobucket/google/..."

Yeah, it's annoying, but it will inevitably happen as soon as something is posted in public online. I'm pretty sure icon makers who like a piece of art enough to use it in their icons would like to know who made it, but sometimes they really don't know the source.

I'm not replying on the second part of your comment: yeah, I might be mistaken, but the two of us don't have enough statistics to solidly conclude what most "people assume".

That's why I try to avoid stating my opinions as fact; even though I've observed this behaviour, I have no way of knowing if it's universal.
