Sad thing is Tolkien said Gollum could have redeemed himself if not for Sam.

Did he really? D: That's tragic. I've never been entirely fond of Sam, honestly, but that definitely hammers another nail into the coffin.

Yeah, I strongly disagree with that, Tolkien. Sam was a bit of a dick sometimes (in extreme circumstances!), but he was also protecting Frodo from Gollum at the time, and he wasn't wrong to do so. The only chance Gollum could have had is if he hadn't been able to get to Frodo at Mount Doom and Frodo ended up jumping in himself (or Sam grabbed him and threw in the Ring). Then the Ring would be gone and maybe Gollum could have had a chance.
