I think anyone demanding you always must include condom use in sex scenes is being silly, but it's not like it has to be written like a sex-ed lesson. Lots of fics mention a condom being used without masking a big deal of it, to the point that you vould just pretend it didn't happen.

It seems to me that condom use in fic really varies by fandom. Of course there are historical and fantasy settings where it makes no sense, and scifi settings where you can just hand-wave and say all STIs are curable/preventable/extinct and there are other forms of effective birth control. Then there's other settings where condom use is both possible and fairly plausible. It came up a lot in Johnlock fic, but as someone above noted, it's practically non-existent in Aziraphale/Crowley fic. Makes sense to me.
