I'm not sure how much it matters to me either way, but I've read so many with either a discussion or an almost automatic condom use that I find it very surprising when there's not any mention of it before or after, since I read a lot of first time between normal (or normal enough that STIs are a consideration) humans who have obviously been sexually active before. But that actually probably happens in real-life more often than I would like to think about.
