GRRM said that "srsly for realz this time i will totally finish my book" recently, swearing he'd lock himself until his book was finished, but after countless mea culpas over not finishing his series, I think people in general have gotten cynical against him, since GoT (horribly) finished his series before he did it.

Maybe he might be feeling the pressure of people no longer caring about his books now that the TV series ended with a horrible taste on everyone's mouth, as even he knows he will fade into obscurity if he does not publish another groundbreaking best-seller for his series, but at his age, people have just resigned themselves that he will never finish his series.
