Yeah, that...always kind of bothered me?

I mean, you get lots of male characters who hit on women frequently/are big flirts and everybody adores them.

And then you get female characters who act the same way and everybody labels her a great big slut and shuns her and hates on her. Why the hypocrisy, world? Women have just as much of a right to be comfortable with their sexuality as men do. :|

it's frustrating, yeah. but it's not about sexuality for me, though (because really, society as a whole is to blame for that).

it's the idea that women in fiction are not allowed to be needy, they're not allowed to be vulnerable, they're not allowed to be twisted and fucked up cuz oh noes! then they won't be 'good role model' to women everywhere.

and then you got people complaining about female characters not being complex and interesting as male characters... yeah, cuz when was the last time somebody screamed their lungs out about 'ZOMG! GOOD MALE ROLE MODELS!'

Seriously. :/ On the other hand, I do get that due to society in general, it's extremely hard for writers to tread that fine line in making women both flawed and strong and realistic and keep everyone happy. And in truth, I've only ever been able to point to Joss as someone who's at least made a decent and somewhat successful attempt in doing this.

which is a shame, isn't? :/ I mean Seriously, most female characters are either a 'sweet, naive, pure' type or a 'badass, physically strong, ass-kicking' type. what about.. IDK.. a mix of both?

you don't really need to have a special talent to write a believable female character... it's all about having a sense of grasp on human nature.. or to *gasp* try to forget about genders for a sec and create a female character who is a person fist and a woman second.

There are many, many problems with female characters in fiction, though. Not that they're bad role models; they're bad characters. Badly constructed, no development, and them being female the most important part of their characterization are the usual problems.

I think criticism of female characters is very important. Not bashing; well-reasoned, thought-out criticism.

I also think that many female fans hate female characters for reasons they're not aware of, and can't articulate. The words and expressions some people use for these type of female fans are often extremely misogynistic. I think this should be addressed too.

Male characters have an incredible advantage in most works of fiction, which is the reason people don't complain about role models as often. It's very simple, when you think about it; it's the sheer amount of them. Every character doesn't have to represent the essence of "male", since there are so many variations available.

I agree. On the same note, female characters don't have to either. Anyone who thinks otherwise is using very backwards logic or is just stupid.

But this is what happens. I don't blame the fans, really; when there is only ever one type of woman represented, it does feel like we're being told that this is how women are. That's why one of the biggest problems with female characters in fiction is that there are just to few of them.

For the record, If a male character is morally questionable, crazy, well intentioned extremist, or outright evil, he is immedeatly loved and adored by all, but if a female is flawed or villanous in any way? She get an instant hatedom. If a male character is a casanova and/or tends to flirt around? He is loved, but a girl is instantly labeled evil slut >.
