132. LOL!!! Those are exactly all the reasons I look down on people who are obsessed with fanfic. WRITE YOUR OWN STORIES, LOSERS!

(Anonymous) 2008-10-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
YOU FIRST, LOSER!

(Anonymous) 2008-10-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You know there's a difference between writing fanfiction and being obsessed with it?

And you do know of many the fanfic writers who have gone on to pretty prolific and productive careers writing their 'own stories' and have openly credited their time as fanfiction writers as helping to build their own writing chops?

guess not.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-11 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Most fanfic writers are entitlement whores who don't care that they don't own the characters and worlds they're stealing in their writing. That's what I hate about them.

Lee Goldberg, is that you?

how low you've fallen...

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What are they entitled to and how are they stealing? I don't understand.

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
They're stealing the original characters! Yes, once fanficcers have written fanfic, the original authors can't ever use those characters again! And people who write fanfic think they're entitled to break into the houses of the original authors and suck all their ideas right out of their brains!!!

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly, fanfic writers ambush real writers in the parking lot and steal their plots.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
..you mean...we're not supposed to do it that way?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Who cares? Really, who cares? Does it really matter? It's a hobby. Is it really that much worse than collecting stamps?

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize that you just dismissed a significant part of classic literature? Just checking.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Is that really criminal to do? Just wondering.

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
No, I was just wondering if that's what he intended to do. I see a lot of people going "FANFIC WRITERS ARE NOT REAL WRITERS BECAUSE THEY USE OTHER PEOPLE'S CHARACTERS" without even considering that there are plenty of well-respected writers that do just that. I just wanted to know whether they hate half of classic literature or just lack a well thought out position.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be honest, "classic literature uses other people's characters" isn't a completely well-reasoned position in my opinion. It's simply not true that they use other people's characters in the same way that fanfic does. Fanfic strives to preserve the personality and mannerisms of the characters that it uses. Classic literature tends to just take the character's name, history/circumstances and then do whatever it bloody well pleases. It's easy to say that they're the same thing if you're looking at it superficially, but again, the reasons and the context make them two very different things.

Fanfic strives to preserve the personality and mannerisms of the characters that it uses.

Not necessarily. I think the problem here is that I have a broader definition of fanfiction. For example, I can easily conceive fanfiction that does exactly what you said classic literature does. There are several fanfics around that take inspiration from the original canon but put their own twist on the characters, develop their own universe, which sometimes diverges wildly from canon.

Of course, that is not generally what the reader looks for when reading fanfic, as opposed to other works. He generally looks for things that preserve the characters. It's true that the culture surrounding fanfiction is different, but that's a different issue.

Of course, I'm not arguing that classic literature and fanfiction are the same thing. As you say, they're quite different universes. It's just that the line is a lot more blurred than it seems at first glance.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Fanfic strives to preserve the personality and mannerisms of the characters that it uses.

I think you're mistaken here, actually. Or, at least not completely correct; while fanfic strives to make characters recognizable, it also strives to explore new possibilities in that character. Many categories of fanfic also do exactly what you described classic literature doing.

Classic literature tends to just take the character's name, history/circumstances and then do whatever it bloody well pleases.

I think this is a misconception too. Sometimes this is the case, but not in, for example, use of certain of Austen's characters, Sherlock Holmes or the Cthulhu myths.

Fanfic is too wide and sprawling to easily categorize, I think, except for calling it derivative. I mean, it's not like all fanfic writers and readers have the same reasons for liking it. Now, certain types of fanfic is a different thing. But I'd rather not put the well-plotted, well-written, novel length Harry Potter AU that rewrites all seven books in the same category as a one shot where everybody runs around screaming about llamas.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. I'll continue writing my own stories. And also writing fanfiction, because it's fun and my hobby is writing. Plus, I like practicing and honing my writing on something that I know will never get published, but which other people might enjoy, and I certainly enjoy doing. (:

ARGUMENT FAILLLLLL.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think what happens is this; there are one too many entitlment obsessed Fan-Ficcers out there, who think copyright is evil, and it is destroying the little guy. There are some people who believe that copyright should be reduced and the rights reduced--it's hard enough to make it as a novelist as it is. I think Fan-Fiction is a toy, myself. Sadly, there are Fan-Ficcers who would think nothing of stealing and making money of off someone else's creation.

For many people, these is the only type of Fan-Ficcer that they ever bump into.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 02:17 am (UTC)(link)

Are there now. Where are these phantom ficcers? I've never met a single one.

Sadly, there are Fan-Ficcers who would think nothing of stealing and making money of off someone else's creation.

These too. How are they making money off of other people's creations, again?

Sounds ot me like you've met maybe two fanficcers in your whole life and they were these people. Half the people you talk to on LJ probably write fanfic and they do not fall into either of the above categories.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I work conventions. Lots and lots of conventions. I see these types all the time. (I met a guy, who was angry that he couldn't publish his Batman poetry epic--insert rant about the evils of copyright here. And another was upset that copyright got passed down to family members and wanted things to go public after twenty years. It goes downhill from there, there is a long list.) There are crazy Fandom people, who don't use LJ to voice their opinons on such things.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-10-12 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
See, I've seen some of those too, but I didn't think they were nearly that common. It's ridiculous, just as ridiculous as those who think that all fanfiction should be illegal because it is stealing from the creator and spitting all over their work (I've heard THAT one once or twice, too).

I don't think it's that common that the OP has only ever met those fanficcers, but yeah, that attitude is retarded. Some fanficcers are just in it for fun, though. I write original stuff, but write fic as well because it's my hobby and does not need to be a Deep Meaning one, but there are plenty of fanficcers that don't want to do anything important with writing at all, don't want to get published, just like writing and get inspired by the canons they like. I've seen a lot more people like the OP who don't seem to understand that than I have the crazyficcers. *shrug*
