that fanon and canon shipping is different. (Really, they seem to be approached in completely different ways to start with.)
No, not really. The only difference I see with canon is that it's proven and that's it. I've seen people approach canon unrealistically many times in my years of fandom and I've seen people approach fanon pairing realistically. It don't heavily favored in one or another because it's fanon or canon, but more on the author's ability to sell that relationship.

But it irks me when someone thinks a canon relationship can't be unrealistic (lol Twilight) and a fanon can't be realistic.

Actually, I usually dump canons where the relationships (romantic or otherwise) don't work for me, or where I think fanon is better. If it isn't working for me, then (for me as an individual, not for everyone) the authors/s isn't/aren't doing the job right. Looking at things primarily through shipping-canon or fanon-or looking for a ship is something that totally escapes me.

I wasn't thinking of realistic/unrealistic when I said they seem to be approached differently, but rather, what's wanted out of them. What is vs what could be.

But some canon relationships are rarely explored fully beyond the hookup, leaving a lot of speculation to do and people approach this in different ways. Sometimes what happens in canon means little to the person who ship the canon pairing and put their perception of the couple over it. There's various reasons why someone would ship a canon couple like how someone would fanon.

And I agree of getting into series just for the ship though. I actually love the series I'm in fandom in regardless of shipping and I have plenty of series I don't even ship a thing. Shipping for me is just playing around, purely for fun.

And doesn't it suck when the canon pairing doesn't click? And I admit I feel bad when I think so.

Very true, and I have little interest in (or tolerance for) something that's all "my otp! my otp is all that matters!" especially when there's things in the canon that scream "*bleep* no!" like a lot of kdramas and shoujo (no idea if you're into either) and I want to go "uhm...yes, ok, there's angst, but what the way the guy is sexually harassing her or being a creep or lying, etc? Shouldn't you factor that in?" and there are things that applies to on both sides of the canon/fanon fence.

I admit, part of it is that I don't see why shipping is All Important in fandom, and also that it's extremely rare that I've seen a person like their fanon ship enough to defend it or talk about it where, if there's a canon "interferer," they don't take it out on that character, even if they don't realize they're doing that, or pretend they aren't, or that it's better for the canon character when they clearly just don't want to be accused of bashing.

I don't mind if the canon pairing does nothing for me as long as there are other things going on that I like, as long as it doesn't bother me. It's just that, if it does bother me, it'll probably bother me enough to affect my overall enjoyment, so I'm just better off going elsewhere.

Oh, I watch the occasional K-drama and read shoujo and get what you're saying. It is odd if an emotionally abusive relationship is all of sudden depicted as sugar cube and sparkling stars. I sorta hate the ones the couple become all domestically when they're not really like that.

I don't think shipping is ALL important in fandom. It's more like fandom is one of the few places to explore that kind of option. Another big reasons are that humans are animals enchanted by the idea of romantic love. That's why you see a lot of romantic geared stuff in both canon and fanon. I've been in fanon that the "interferer" is bashed on, although it really depends what character the "interferer" is. Like if she's a really great character, she has much less chance to get bashed at. However, anything goes when she's the typical trophy love interest and doesn't develop beyond that type. I'm sort of glad that most of my fandom that doesn't bash the "interferer" (although in one fandom, there is some secret hatred of one female character because she gets more spotlight than the other female characters in the series).

True, but I wish there would be some sparks to justify it all.
