Actually, I recognize that all of those bodies are derivative, but not that they meet the criteria for fanfiction. I think that derivative fiction and fanfiction are two different things, in the same way a fic is different from an allusion.

Fanfic is written in a different culture, with a different purpose, for a different audience, and from a different kind of medium. Shakespeare might have lifted his plotline and basic concept for Romeo and Juliet, but that's not what fanfics do. You still can't compare the two.

See, I don't think fanfiction is inherently much different from derivative fiction in general. The difference is, as you say, the culture surrounding it, but just because fanfiction readers generally expect a fic to follow certain standards doesn't mean that it has to. As far as I'm concerned, as long as it's based in some way on the canon, it's fair game to post if on FFnet.

Then I'd agree with you that the issue is that you're using a much more liberal definition of fanfic than I am.
