I'm laughing so hard right now! Woah, I never meant it to be wanky, but it got that way because I phrased it like shit.

What I want to know is why can't people just like a character as they are? Why do they have to pair up a character that, canonically, is perfectly happy all alone? I just don't get it. I like the characters for who they are, not for who they can get together with.

I honestly think many in fandom are just projecting what they want in a relationship into their character's relationship. And that kinda makes me sad.

I agree with this, completely.

I don't think I've ever encountered a canon that presented a character that was like "I AM PERFECTLY HAPPY ALONE."

I also think that your opinion is based on a lot of assumptions. Why can't you like a character and want to explore their relationship with another character?

Honestly, in some canons you have to be blind to realize that certain characters are not looking for a relationship.

My best example is Tres Iqus from Trinity Blood. The ~~man~~cyborg is married to the job. I really cannot see him fanning over Abel Nightroad, because HE IS AN ANDROID. A MACHINE. But some fangirls just don't get it.

I've also been ostracized by much of a f-list/RL friends for not being able to ship. "OMG HOW CANT YOU SEE IT ARE YOU BLIND!?" Sorry but I can't. I just enjoy video games/manga/anime/tv series for what they are.

Then find new people who can indulge in your gen tendencies instead of bashing those who want to ship. You can have both, yanno.

And again, you're making assumptions. Not all shipping is about romance, not all relationships are romantic, and "I ship it" can mean a million different things to a million different people. My problem here is that you're basically calling into question the validity of exploring a relationship. This probably isn't want you're intending to do, but my mind has run away with the idea again and I'm left with the impression that you think that exploring a character through their interpersonal relationships (romantic or otherwise) is illegitimate.

I don't find it illegitimate, I hate it when people basically bend situations for them to work for their ship (IchiRuki, IchiHime fans I am looking at you!)

I just don't get it. I have no problem with people exploring character's relationships well, like in this fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3170718/1/How_Not_To_Date_Blondes) over here. Sure, the relationship is not canon in the game, but this two authors do one thing that most fangirl/fanboys of certains ships forget---- progression. Two characters don't just wake and suddenly, OMFG TRUE WUV.

No, I don't think you're being stupid at all. I think you have a very legitimate complaint that's getting caught up under generalizations and assumptions. I, too, hate it when characters are just suddenly OMG TWU LUV, but I don't think that's all that shipping means.

I can't answer your question from the perspective that you'd like it answered, but I can speculate that it's for one or a combination of the following reasons:
1) Fun
2) Porn
3) They believe that the characters can be explored or enriched through the relationship
4) They believe that the dynamic is incredibly interesting
5) They feel it's neither here nor there if the character is happy, and may indeed be more interested in the character when they're conflicted, angry or struggling.

Your secret makes a lot more sense with this context. I've never really understood pairings that aren't based in canon either.

I think we all know at least of few of that kind of fan. I can see how that would make one angry and cause an abrasive secret.

To address this in order:

1)Y-yeah that was phrased really badly. XD Glad you did go to the trouble of clearing it up!

2)I do like characters just as they are. And I like friends as just friends. Groups as just groups of friends. Rivals as just rivals (and maybe friends too, maybe not). Enemies as just enemies. However, I love exploring all the different possibilities for that character. Alone, with another character as best friends, with that same character as a sweet relationship, with that same character as OMG ANNOYING WE ARE RIVALS, with that same character as an unhealthy/imperfect relationship/just physical thing... Lather, rinse, and repeat for other characters, groups, and dynamics.

There are also some aspects of a character that just would not come out while they're all by themselves. They might act and think differently while they're with their sister. Their cousin. Their teacher. Their best friend. The guy they're competing with but isn't so bad really. Their idol. The guy who tried to kill them and who they don't trust nearly as far as they can throw him. Any of these suddenly becoming a romantic or just purely sexual relationship would totally change the dynamics and the way the character reacts to everything. And I find that extremely interesting.

3)... my ships tend not to resemble anything at all I would ever really want out of a real life relationship. J-JUST SAYIN'. ;;;;;

Put that way, yeah, it makes a lot more sense and you shouldn't be given grief for liking what you like.

On the other hand, I still resent the fact that there has to be any meaning at all to who I decide to dump into bed/into a relationship. Sometimes, it's just about the sex and there are no deeper meanings or hidden agendas. Sometimes, sex is just sex.

I'm not trying to sublimate my own real life relationships by interjecting it into a fantasy thing. I like porn. I like two bodies having sex. Really...honestly....there sometimes isn't any more to it than that.

And, btw, I'm not a teenager.

Shipping character A with character B does not mean that the shipper doesn't like either character as they are. It just means s/he finds the two characters together to be interesting. Or hot. Or whatever. I like to ship (all different kinds of ships, too. Not just sexual or romantic stuff). I like crack ships especially. But none of the characters I love do I love ONLY for shipping purposes. Exploring relationships, or possible relationships, that feature them is just a bonus.

Now, if people are bitching at you because they think their preferences should be your preferences, that's not cool. But I think it's kind of equally not cool to make assumptions about the vast majority of fandom and imply that just because someone is a shipper they don't truly like the characters as they are written in their canon. Or that they MUST be projecting. Some people do project, I admit, but not everyone does by any means. So the generalization is pretty unfair.

From my (personal) experience, people who ask this sort of question are usually not really interested in hearing the answer at all. People who really are interested more often than not already partially understand the answer in the first place.

In case I'm mistaken and you genuinely do want to know however... think of it like dipping fries in ice cream. For some the two just scream to go together, another group will shriek in horror for us to leave the poor fries and ice cream alone, while yet some other couldn't give less of a shit either way.

On an tangential note... just what sort of wish fulfillment do you think someone can project into Squid/Hogwarts? I mean, damn, that's the kind of shit seriously worth knowing.

judging from the ops answers further up in this thread, I'd say you're right. she'd rather act all martyred and sit on her superior horse and look down her nose at people who are genuinely doing this for ~~the porn~~ for fun.
