Wait, canon can't be badly written and almost all of fanon is crap and just unrealistic projection? Wait, what?

No, canon can DEFINITELY be badly written. A lot of it certainly is. But fanon is more likely to be unrealistic because... well, from my experience - and I certainly don't hold this true for all fanon 'ships - there is quite a bit of fanon that is slash which will NEVER HAPPEN and only gets 'shipped for the sake of 'shipping two men together. This behaviour annoys me. Basically it has turned me off fanon 'shipping within fandom (and it goes along with a lot of batshittery as well). Of course, all of this happens in canon as well, but in the canon communities I'm a part of, it happens to a much lesser extent.

Same go for het and yuri pairings for shipped for shipping sake and they do this often as slash fans, canon or het in my experience in fandoms I've bee in. Plus I doubt you you know why a person ships a certain couple and it's highly presumptuous to think most slash fans ship for shipping for shipping's sake. Rarely people state out why they do unless they're asked why.

Ah, see, the thing with this is, I ship a lot of pairings that I know will never happen in canon. Het, slash, femslash. I don't care that it will never happen, and in a lot of cases wouldn't want it to happen in canon. And yes, a lot of pairings I ship partially because it's hot. But with any pairing I ship, I have to like the characters themselves, and like the way they interact and work together. This just happens to hold true for 99% of any characters in any fandom, um. I find the male characters in my fandoms easier to write most of the time (or at least, more of the male characters than the female ones), so I tend to default to writing either slash or gen, but I do it because I love the interactions between the characters, not just because they both have penises.

Also, randomly, I hope my ships aren't unrealistic projections about what I want in a real life relationship because that would say frightening, frightening things about me, uh. ._.

But why would slash be less realistic? Men fall in love with other men and women with other women all the time. *doesn't get it*
