How does it make it not fun for other people? As long as s/he doesn't go around flaming everyone who writes about the females, then there's no harm in it. Do I have to be interested in things that I don't like, because I'm obligated to make fandom fun for others, or something?

On the other hand, almost everyone flames slash (well, okay, so maybe not in my main fandom, but that's beside the point). And make it less fun for us.

but fangirls like you make it difficult to find those stories, and your lack of interest in them discourages other people from writing them.

Again, how? I have a ship that's nearly non existent in the fandom. I recently started writing about them. Barely get comments on the fics, but I write them for fun, for my own enjoyment, and for those few people who I know like said ship too.

I will say that honestly, in a perfect world, people would have broader interests. I'm not upset by that, but I do wish they did. And the writing of stuff about how you hate character x and then a bunch of people go into their journal and are all "Yeah totally" I think does make it more tricky for people who do like character x—I mean, look at all that SPN wank over female characters. It's a mess. Not a fandom I'd want to write het in.

Seriously, what fandom are you in where "everyone" flames slash? I haven't been flamed for slash in years. LJ fandom is definitely skewed toward the slashy; it almost takes slash as a kind of norm. (Never mind that the het shippers are too busy fighting with each other.)

I love how in fandom we want to think that our actions have no effect on other people. I also write for an incredibly small and ignored ship, and I also write because I adore them and because a small group of other people like them too. But if you were in main fandom I'm not sure you'd know that the ship even exists or is being written for. People post in f!s all the time saying "woe where's the fic" and someone provides a link because it can be hard to find. And yes, there are plenty of people who frankly, write for attention or to make friends, and they will get neither from writing for a small ship. They follow trends and write piles of out-of-character smut for the person who wrote this secret, until it gets to a place where people who aren't interested in "hot ship of the moment" or its ooc smut actually leave the communities that were supposed to be multiship but have been taken over by the one ship. Once that happens, how are those people supposed to find the rare stuff they once liked? And sometimes those people even leave the fandom. I mean, to be in SGA and not be a McShepper has to be a nightmare. And I know people who've had great ideas and haven't bothered writing something because who will care? I myself have my moments of "what am I doing?" about fics I've written/am writing because when you're not in that main ship it really can get discouraging.

And it's also discouraging to like those characters that the slashfangirls hate because it makes it harder to even read the main ship, because along the side is gratuitous bashing of the girls precisely because those slashfangirls love that stuff. I just read a story that was going along, and it was great, and then at the end made one of my favorites into the villain, which others do, and I feel like it's unoriginal and ooc, and I'm beginning to realize that these girls don't just not care about the characters I like, but actively hate them and want to see them humiliated in fics. That doesn't make me feel welcome in fandom, or think there's a lot of point in posting my stories on the main comm—and yet, what about someone new to the pairing?

Do I write anyway? Definitely. Does some of the fun get taken out of it sometimes because I feel like Sisyphus? You bet. Am I envious of people who ship the main ship and whose lives are easier? Absolutely.

Oh, I'm in a fandom where slash is actually the norm, given there's about 90 if not more male characters, and under 10 female characters. And that in mind, I prefer my slash to having to deal with self-insert Mary-Sue OCs. But whenever I look outside of my little fandom corner I see people complaining about a) so much slash around, b) slasher fans, c) slash-this-and-that. Be it here, f!s, or brps (since I also enjoy roleplay).

And for the record, I do have plenty female characters I love and slash isn't all there is for me. I'm just baffled by all these people jumping the OP's throat (she did say in a comment somewhere that she doesn't bash the female characters). Personally I haven't really found anything ... offensive about it? Whatever floats your boat -- as long as you don't force it down my throat I don't care (and no, posting shitload of, possibly ooc, smut or otherwise fic isn't forcing, because I can still choose not to read it). But then again, I haven't really come across those crazy slashers just yet.

I guess it might be from my little fandom ... I don't know, experience? Because I stick to one right now, and to a small group of people at that too. I can't see how a multiship community can be taken over by a single ship? Unless the mods like, I don't know, delete or not allow posting of other fic/fanart... but somehow I don't see how that could ever be the case. Or unless people openly bash others who post works about different ships? Otherwise, personally, no matter how many works on this current big ship that everyone (supposedly) loves are posted, I'd still post my fic about some other one if I thought it was good enough. Flames? Flames would just get deleted.

But my own experiences aside, I can see your points.

I envy people who like the popular ships too, but then I remember my own love for doujinshi and how much more there would be of it if my ship was more popular (and how much more money I'd end up spending -- already spend too much), or how much more badfic there would be... yeah, I'm somewhat a little glad it's not the main ship.
