Are we talking about self-inserts, or just randomly bringing in a character who adds nothing to the story and doesn't influence events at all? Because... the latter would make zero sense to me.

This was inspired by a story where the main character of Bleach is added to the cast of RWBY. It keeps seeming like there are points where he’ll affect the course of the story, but it keeps playing out the same way as canon. (Apparently, he saves someone’s life at the end of season 3, but I didn’t get anywhere near that before I gave up out of boredom.)

Eh, it's probably the same basic premise as a self-insert. There's something about the character that the author gets self-indulgent joy out of writing. (Best-case scenario, they get better at plot eventually...)
