In the Wiz, Dorothy is supposed to be a 24 year old teacher. It's an adaptation of Wizard of Oz, not a direct remake.

I'm not sure a 1970s tv movie and a big budget 21st century movie are the same thing? Like literally the last place my mind went was "I'm worried they will cast a middle aged woman to play this teenager."

the Wiz wasn't a TV movie, it originally played theaters.

Diana Ross threw her weight around and basically strong armed her way into the role. They originally wanted to cast someone younger (Stephanie Mills was specifically in consideration) and told Ross she was too old to play the part.
