I just thought it looked like a pretty wuxia film coming out of America instead of China. There was nothing there that felt, emotionally, like the animated film Mulan. No sense of nostalgia.
I'm sure the film will be magnificent, but I'm not likely to spend time on it.

Yeah, the thing is, I have already seen these realistic and/or wuxia takes on the Hua Mulan myth produced by various Chinese companies over the years. This shit is nothing new, and Chinese productions were always good at stretching a budget so you can't even say that Disney money will notably improve anything. They're stripping away all the elements that made the Disney film stand out. No songs, no fantasy, no animation? Then it's a no from me, dawg.

ayrt - Exactly! If I want to watch wuxia Mulan, why wouldn't I watch one of the existing films? I *like* wuxia, but let's not pretend Disney is doing anything new or innovative here.
