Ok, so I'm autistic and for me hyperfixation is... it's like having my brain plugged into a mains electrical supply and I just cannot. stop. thinking. about the thing, everything relates to the thing, it's this intense positive feedback loop where your brain just goes up and up like you're flapping your arms fast enough to fly, and you can't unplug it so while this sensation is amazing after a while it's also intensely exhausting because you're strung tight like a violin string that entire time and this feedback loop keeps going and it interferes with doing other stuff but it's still amazing, it's the best thing ever and you really don't want it to end but also you would like to get some fucking sleep sometimes and everyone in your life is like "can you just stop talking about your weird Chinese fantasy drama" and you legit can't think of anything else to talk about because HAPPY BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS.

Anyway, that's hyperfixation for me.

It's an impoverishment of the English language that we use the same words for moods and dysfunctional symptoms. Which of course leads to fuckheads like AYRT denying that the dysfunctions exist for some people.

Thank you for this description! I'm pretty sure this is not what most people in fandom who use the word are talking about.
