Superficially they have the same meaning, exactly as shy has the same superficial meaning as socially anxious. However, more accurately, they don't. In exactly the same way as shy is more accurately not the same as socially anxious. "Obsession" and "shy" are both umbrella terms which cover a whole spectrum, the extreme ends of which are "hyperfixation" and "social anxiety". Using the second terms conveys more precision and describes something which the first terms are too broad to do accurately.
