I haven't read these, but as far as the 50s publications is concerned, I have a book from that era which is all about desegregating a high school football team and a suburban neighborhood. So there *were* some progressive books written then, which makes this even more disappointing. Especially considering the character arc.

Yeah, and there's lots of books out there at the time like Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames which, while not particularly gender equal or groundbreaking, were about girls and women having adventures and careers.

They were published in the 40s and early 50s and take place earlier - Betsy graduates high school in 1910.

AYRT-- ah. Even so, there's Daddy Long-legs which was published in 1911, and the main character in that expected to have a career. It just does sound like a disappointing way to end the series.
