I would have thought the patriotic song we all wish we could forget was “Brought to You Courtesy of the Red White and Blue.”

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, definitely this. God Bless the USA is typically over the top patriotism, but to me, it's just some dumb thing that we were forced to sing for school concerts every once in a while long before 9/11 and no different from any other "YAY USA!" song.

Toby Keith, on the other hand, cashing in his with warmongering...

I have never actually heard that song.........

(Anonymous) 2019-08-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I remember being in the military before 9/11 and this song was playing at the club on the stereo or something, and some dipfuck wanted people to stand up.

No. It's not the national anthem, and this is a club. I am drinking tequila. Go fuck yourself, Jerry.

I always cringe when I hear this song. Just like I cringe when I see someone dressed in over the top flag gear with eagles and camouflage, or their truck is plastered with eagles and flags... It says white racist guy to me.

Me too. And I see that way too much in Texas.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I cringe at that too. I'm sure there are perfectly nice people out there who are just super into over the top patriotism and eagles and stuff, but my brain automatically goes, "Must avoid these people".

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Maybe they're perfectly nice people but...yeah, probably not.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

I cannot stand this song, either.

I hate this song so much.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I hate everything this song represents. I hate that there are so many people now that have forgotten what life was like pre-9/11. I hate that we've normalized every incredibly fucked up thing the government's done in the name of "homeland security" to people who were too young to remember it or hadn't even been born yet. I hate that we'll never come back from it because everyone so willingly rolled over and gave up all their rights for security theater. I hate how completely the terrorists won. They got us scared. They made us change everything. It all worked.

I agree with you completely.

+1

Your comment is way more patriotic than that fucking song, Anon. Land of the free and home of the brave, my ass. We're surrounded by bigots and cowards.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ew.

I hated this shit song the first time it was big, back in 1984. It's a country song but people were so into that shit that it got airplay on rock stations. Sucks if your me and you hate country music. And Toby Keith? Fuck that motherfucker!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
There was a lot of airplay for it then. I like it as a song, but they were awfully repetitive with it. I was a little surprised when I found out it was written in response to Russia shooting down a Korean Airlines flight. But it has been co-opted three times - for 9-11, for the Gulf War, and for Reagan. I actually really dislike God Bless America, though, and I had to sing This Land Is Your Land too many times in Music as a kid to ever really enjoy it again.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-29 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I had no idea it was so old, I thought it was written in response to 9/11 because that was the only time I ever heard it.

(Anonymous) 2019-08-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I would guess it's sort of dependent on your age, region, and how much you register political and military machinations (9-11's was sort inescapable). But the song is 35 years old this year.
