106. Oh shit, I knew he looked familiar!

116. Of course, because as a man she'd be defying all kinds of gender roles. The genderswap tests only work up to a point. I think it's best to confine it to actions but even that's problematic.

128. Why do you blame the character when the author writes them this way? Give those books to the authors. Then, see if they care.

139. I hope you read the book. I also hope you don't advocate torture and terrorism as a way of bringing people to your cause. ACKNOWLEDGE THE MORAL AMBIGUITY, GODDAMMIT.

142. The problem isn't that a fictional character saved your life, it's that a fictional character that hasn't been designated as a life-saver saved your life. Jesus might as well have been fictional, after all.

159. I love it.

I lol'd when i saw the "fandom" after it. Kamina Jesus. He died for your sins >.> AKA, so you wouldn't kill yourself :D

I am a sick and disgusting person *face desk* And I'm the one who posted the secret >.>

You're not a sick or disgusting person at all. I actually have a lot of thoughts on drawing strengths from fictional characters and I think it's perfectly legitimate.

Look at it this way:

A lot of people have role models or idols that they will never meet, never speak to, but still allow them to draw strength and courage in times that are hard. It's true that the person they idolize is real in an objective sense, but subjectively, a famous sports star or a politician is no more real to you than a fictional character is and you might wind up knowing the details of the latter more intimately than the former.

We're emotional and social creatures. We draw off of other's strengths. Stories are designed to provoke and inspire these emotional responses, so why should there be shame in having them? Basically, the source of your inspiration is human, and whether it's real is irrelevent.

I know. I take solace in the fact that if I was thrust into the Gurren Lagann world, Kamina would give a fuck if I lived or died, whereas, were I to die here, I highly doubt McCain would think *once* about it >.> It's a comforting thought every time I feel embarrassed about my secret ^^

FWIW, I completely agree with [livejournal.com profile] paperclipchains here.

128 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-10-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I tend to look at this from a Watsonian perspective, not a Doylist one. (Explanation here: http://fairestcat.livejournal.com/292797.html )
You have a good point, but my brain's not always a completely fair place.

Those are amazing terms and I am so grateful to you for having introduced them to me.

BUT.

I can't help but feel that one approach is going to be more correct than the other in some situations, and that since seme/uke is a common archetype, I think it's an authorial decision rather than a character trait.
