118 "Nomnomnom" isn't funny anymore under any circumstances. Few catch phrases can survive the onslaught of unfunny people driving them into the ground.

122 The problem is, you can't care about them as much as they care about you, even if you aren't an asshole. And it's that imbalance that causes the problems, because of the misapprehension that fandom is egalitarian, that people all just do what they want to do, and that only horrible venal people do things in order to be popular or get a name in fandom. So there's jealousy, yes, but also that weird jockeying for position to be the friend of the BNF, and it all creates a kind of mess. The only thing that I've seen people do that makes it better is to be very gracious, respectful and appreciative of what people do for you, try never to be condescending, and don't be disingenous about the power differential, because everyone knows it's there.

If people put you on a pedestal, I don't see why you should have to change your behavior to suit them.

I don't think you have to change your behavior, but you do have to decide how you're going to respond to the pedestal, you know? Even if it's just to decide you're going to pretend it's not there--knowing that your normal behavior is going to look different viewed from that angle.

This is true. Then again if BNFs get put on the pedestal because they're genuinely more talented, witty, and/or knowledgable than everyone else, maybe they have the right to lord it a bit.

I was responding to the OP who seemed to not want people to think she's an asshole, and I was like, it's really hard but maybe you can do these things. If you don't care, then you don't care.

But it really is about the stupidity of people wanting to be so admiring of others, but hating them at the same time. I've just seen it up close. It's pretty lame all around.
