I completely agree. No one's claiming it's a miracle cure, but for some people it can give them something to hang on to when they have nothing else.

It just makes me feel bad for people who have no one else or feel they have no one else. I know some people don't have loved ones who understand their condition and so it may be necessary for them to put their faith in fictional characters for encouragement, but that kind of depresses me. In all actuality it was my husband who was there for support and kept me alive for the past five years. So if all I had was a character I probably would've committed suicide a long time ago.

Butting my nose in here, but: I think it's more complex than that, or at least it can be. Relating to the character can be a kind of therapy. As a suicidally depressed teenager I had people who loved me, although didn't understand my condition (didn't recognize it was one until later), but no one I felt understood. I became a deranged Phantom of the Opera fan because here was a character who could understand my pain, who truly felt it, and who I could escape with and hide away under the opera house and who'd bump off my enemies for me. Who was also a musical genius. I don't mean I really thought that was going to happen, lol, but it served a weird emotional need. It was also cathartic, crying to the story was a way of letting out pain.

Later as I got involved in fandom activities I ended up meeting real people who actually understood or shared my feelings, so it turned out to be a practical help too.
