Do you consider ghostwriting cheating?

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2019-09-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've been looking into and seriously researching ghostwriting for some of my major ideas including my big one. Maybe I'm just being stupid by asking but I became worried that people would see hiring a ghostwriter as cheating somehow.

I don't think I would personally find it creatively satisfying. IDK who's being cheated.

I think ghostwriting is cool so long as you and the ghostwriter are cool with it. That being said, I also totally get the perception as a reader that it's 'weird' because that sort of thing does tend to eventually come out and it kind of can make people feel cheated out of the 'real' author's work?

IDEK it's mostly an emotional response. Like 'this person whose work I love didn't actually write this thing! How dare they!'

As a writer, I'm fine with it. As a reader, I prefer it when it's acknowledged as something like 'co-written' or what have you?

Sort of? Like, I understand that it's a fairly common and accepted practice. But personally I feel like if something is ghostwritten then the ghostwriter should get co-billing at minimum.

If I read a really great book by a celeb, say, and then found out it was ghostwritten, I wouldn't judge the celeb for being a "cheater," but I also wouldn't give them all that much credit for the book.

Well, I mean, yeah, it is cheating in a way. You're putting your name on and taking credit for something you didn't actually create. I know that as a reader, I would be pretty upset if it came out that my favorite author whose writing I love and admire didn't actually write those books themselves. I admire them because I love their writing, you know?

I guess I do think of ghostwriting as cheating, because to most people, ideas are the easy part. Turning a page or paragraph’s worth of plot summary and a handful of character sketches into a compelling novel/screenplay/what have you is the hard part. Also hiring a ghostwriter costs money; I would guess more money than most people have sitting around.

This. Anyone can churn out ideas; it's taking those ideas and refining them into a polished work that takes practice and effort. That's why authors who write good, compelling stories get so much praise: because it isn't easy.

I don't think so? Maybe it'd be different if you were forcing this ghostwriter to write your ideas, but seeing as how you're an unknown quantity it's not like people would be going "Oh no, I paid for a dani_phantasma book and it wasn't written by dani_phantasma!"

I'd either pick a pen name or do a co-writing thing. I'd think your main hurdle is actually finding someone to do this for you, unless you've got a lot of money to spend on such a project. Ghostwriters are usually compensated very well because they aren't given credit for their work and because well, they're doing like 99% of it.
