As somebody who had a grandparent who was an Irish immigrant in England during the period where deaths due to the pub bombings were common, who was ostracised by friends and colleagues, I feel this.

She never got over what was thrown at her during that time, the things people said.

But people don't educate themselves. It's easy for people to see that, especially Americans, and go "Ugh how could he know, he's white" but believe me, times weren't easy for Irish people during various points in history, The Troubles included, and the reason for it was, quite simply, because they were Irish.

Irish were treated badly in America for a while too, so I assume the people who think that are probably very young.
