Hyper cheery people who think everyone else needs to be the same way and tell you to "smile" all the time and try to force you to be happy and just don't seem to understand depression or that not everyone's personalities are the same as theirs.

Yeah, I've lost a couple of friendships over that one unfortunately. They weren't bad people - but we were just incompatible.

Yup. Some of my mother's friends are that way, and it is really irritating. The thing is, there are plenty of cheery people who are perfectly capable of understanding that others are different. One of my best friends is someone who is almost always happy and high energy. But she gets that I have depression and have a different personality. And she doesn't try to force me to cheer up all the time. We can be ourselves with each other, and that's why our friendship works.

mercifully they've stopped doing this but my parents used to get pissed at me for not smiling when I was in a bad mood

My dad still tells everyone to smile. Half-jokingly, but only half. He does it to everyone he's close to. Drives me up a wall.

Funnily enough telling me to smile is the fastest way to ensure I'll do the opposite, yet it never seems to occur to these folks. Baffling.

Granted not everyone like this is awful, my sister-in-law is relatively peppey but she also gets that I'm not like her and is able to understand when I am in fact being enthusiastic in my own way.

But strangers like this are always a goddamn hassle to interact with.

I always tend to have a smile and be cheery, but I do get you on the people trying to force you to feel a certain thing... I guess I've never really felt what it was like to have people tell me to 'smile' all the time, but I have had my father on numerous occasions tell me to 'stop with that damn smile already'. It's pretty much just my default, especially when I'm feeling stressed and emotional... I guess I tell it to myself more than anything, that pretending to be happy is better than acknowledging that something is wrong? If that makes sense.
A funny story is that when I worked for my father I was almost nicknamed Smiley (I told them no right away, though I kinda wish I didn't since it is a pretty great nickname, tbh;;) by a co-worker. It actually was quite apt, since most of the time I spent smiling through repressed anger while ranting novels at a time over a different employee. (everyone agreed, she was also an owners daughter and did shit all, but my father especially supported her) I never knew Stepford Smiling more than that moment, I have to say... Ugh.

Yup, it isn't the cheery that bothers me, it is the forcing on others. The reverse would bother me too, even if I tend to be a more flat, less emotional, depressed person who doesn't smile much. Just, be who you are but don't force it on other people. Why is that so hard to grasp for some people? No one should have to fake emotions or personality traits just because someone else thinks there is something wrong with their natural ones.
