I don't know much about this show, but the ancients were generally more lenient all around. It's mostly modern culture that can't fathom women being in power, or people like Alexander the Great not being straight. For a long time women Viking warriors were thought to be men just because the were buried with their weapons, for instance. I'm not entirely sure though.
