Not the OP, but I don't think Zuko ever hated Katara. It's been a while since I've seen the show, but I was always under the impression that Katara was the one who was angry and bitter at Zuko because she felt he betrayed her, while Zuko kept wanting her forgiveness. They never "hated each other." If anything, the hatred (which I personally don't think was hatred, just bitterness) was one-sided. And by the end of the series they clearly came to an understanding, giving their relationship a greater chance to develop.

I don't see why relationships can't be described as slightly dysfunctional or argumentative... it's not like most people were perfect angels to their siblings growing up, but that's usually a close bond. Healthy relationships are rarely as perfect and clean as people would like to see them as.
