How is Tenten "awesome and quirky"? When did she actually do something in the story that showed any form of quirkiness (or personality, for that matter)?

Hell, I don't think any of the Naruto characters are interesting, to be honest (especially after the time skip). But I do think the Naruto girls fail big time, but that's mainly because Kishi can't write decent female characters for his life. I think the girls are good IN THEORY, and I've read some awesome fics where they have fleshed out, well-developed personalities, but in the context of the story I just can't see it.

Contrary to popular belief, Tenten isn't actually an inanimate object used to fill the girl slot on Team Gai. She's there to balance out the crazy and provide a down-to-earth and sane voice to Gai and Lee (and save Neji from slitting his wrists) When Lee fought the sound ninja and got knocked out, she chased after him and didn't let him rest; she shook him hard until he woke up. Even though they wear her out, she cares about her teammates, and Team Gai would be a shambles without her :)

Thanks, that clears things up a little. But I still feel that Tenten is virtually an interchangeable character. She has no past, no character development, and while she does have personality (as you pointed out) it is often glossed over. She is never shown having any defining character moments, and her other traits are usually ignored or included in supplementary material as opposed to the manga itself (I think Kishi mentioned somewhere that her hobby is fortune telling, which is actually pretty cool, but it never came up in the manga or anime). I think she has awesome potential, but it is never fully recognized in the story.
