In TSR Zuko brought out the worst in her. He egged on her feelings of anger and revenge. All the while it was Aang who knew what she needed. And Zuko admitted that at the end of the episode. That episode to me showed how not romantically compatible Zuko and Katara are. They seem to be people who need someone to balance them and for Katara, that person seems to be Aang.

Could Zutara be passionate, fiery, and interesting. You bet. But with regards to the characters and how they are, it would end up being a chore for them to maintain and a relationship that is a chore is never healthy. They are far too volatile, far too alike to be healthy together.

I'll admit that the creators certainly did try to say that Aang's philosophy was what she needed, but more than anything, I think it was the confrontation. While I'm not saying what Zuko did in that episode was quite right, it helped her deal with her pain and anger a lot more than Aang's advice to forgive. I didn't see Zuko as egging them on, so much as he saw how much she had bottled them up and gave her an outlet. That being said, I completely understand where you're coming from!

For the same reason why I felt like I was the only person not pissed at Zuko for the s2 finale, I disagree with your assessment of TSR.

Zuko was confused and messed up and didn't know what he wanted, and he made the bad choice, but I think he had to. He needed to go home to find out that it wasn't what he thought it would be. He needed to be literally at his father's right hand to know that it wasn't right. If he never did it would always be a "what if I had chosen different?" in his head, and he'd be dealing with it later rather than sooner.

In the same vein, I think Katara needed to find her mother's killer, to have the opportunity to take out all of her pent-up rage and grief, and choose not to. If she never went to find Yan Ra, she'd always wonder what she'd do. Now she knows, and has made peace.

To my mind, the only thing that justifies Zuko's actions in TSR is that he understands the need to have the opportunity and make a choice. He does, in the beginning of the episode, have a similar confrontation he has mixed feelings about. I understand that that's something I might have made up and wasn't there, but otherwise I think that episode was wildly out of character for him.
