I don't see where Katara is dishonest with Aang or Zuko is dishonest with Mai. Even in the few episodes where the two of them are together I don't see where they're being more honest with each other than with anyone else. Could you give some examples of what you mean, exactly?

This is getting into the nitty gritty, so please excuse me if it's a little... controversial.

In one of the later episodes, Katara is upset at Zuko for betraying her much earlier and she's bitter and hurt. He talks to her and picks up some bottled up anger from when her mother was killed and take her out to deal with it. Aang tells her that she should forgive her mother's murderer. I'm not sure Aang can take the fact that she's hurt, and angry, and can't forgive him. In I think the first episode of season three, Mai asks Zuko if he's cold, and he talks about how he's worried about how things will be different. She glosses over all of it, kisses him and tells him he'll be fine. In the same episode, Katara admits that she's angry and hurt because of what Aang's done, Aang just gets upset with her, but instead of getting upset back, instead of yelling back, she just kind of takes it... That jars me... Katara's very spirited and passionate, but she holds it back. I see that as bottling it up more, particularly because he never tries to make it up to her, he never apologizes. Similarly, Zuko's worried about talking to his uncle who he also betrayed, Katara talks to him to reassure him. He doesn't get simply reassured with a generic statement and a kiss, they work though it.

The most drastic example is that Aang has kissed Katara before the invasion of the fire nation, a few days before the next part of the attack, Aang talks to Katara about having a more serious relationship, she is kind of dancing around and saying that it's no the right time. He gets upset and kisses her after she says she wasn't sure. She gets upset with him because he did that after she said she wasn't ready now. Then somehow between then and the end, they have one more argument as their only conversation. I don't see how she could be happy if he apparently never apologized.

My main thing is that with Aang and Mai, Katara and Zuko don't seem to work through their problems...

That being said, it's fine if you disagree, just you did ask.

I did ask! And thanks for the clarification. It's true they don't really work through their problems that way. I guess I see that more as a function of the fact that Zuko and Katara's relationship is built around a conflict. She's the person who personally dislikes him the most for what he does to them through the series, so she's also the person he has to work the hardest to prove himself to--if she doesn't accept him he's not really accepted by the group since he respects them all.

But they also are somewhat alike as characters, I think. I really do like their relationship. I don't ship them romantically (don't mind if other people do, though!) but I do think they have a really interesting dynamic that will just get more interesting as they get older. I can imagine the two of them being able to help each other over the years where they both kind of get what the other person needs or is feeling. Sometimes the ways they're alike is a bad thing because they encourage each other the wrong way, but other times it could be good.
