I feel like back in the day, people more often just unapologetically hated on things they didn't like instead of always trying to build a "I don't like it because I'm morally superior and woke and everyone who does like it isn't." justification around it. Happened as well, of course, but not nearly as often. Trolls and flamers were annoying as well but easier to deal with than the "my fandom is activism" types.

I honestly suspect that some of the wank is magnified by the political troll farms. I really can't figure out how some of the more outrageous shit like "Rebecca Sugar is a cryptofascist" gets bootsed otherwise.
