Akihiko rapes Haruki.

DA Aw man, really? That sucks. I’m enjoying the anime so far and was really excited to hear that the manga’s gonna get a translation, but I’m not a fan of that yaoi trope and Haruki’s my favorite, so I definitely don’t want to see him get hurt.

What, really? Like, explicitly rapes him? Manga readers being happy about them getting together just became 200 % more messed up. This kinda makes me want to stop watching the anime.

According to the Wikipedia article, they're not together?

Also, I have a few fandom friends who've followed the manga a long time and they're very critical types when it comes to how media portrays problematic things, but they say Given is a sweet series. So that makes me doubt the rape is portrayed as a cute yaoi trope in Given.

I haven't actually read the manga, but according to tumblr squee and scans, Akihiko has committed to change himself to be worthy of Haruki, and as of chapter 28 (?) Haruki has agreed to start dating. If that's preluded by rape, it's exactly the kind of yaoi bullshit I want to avoid. So I'm thinking I'll nope out of this anime.

Akihiko doesn't actually get as far as raping Haruki, he stops once he realises what he's doing. He does come pretty close to doing it though.

It definitely isn't the usual yaoi trope. Haruki doesn't immediately forgive him and start dating him, Akihiko has to work to gain back Haruki's trust.

Well, that's something at least. Still, I just found someone who transcribed the chapter/s in question, and it's a huge nope for me. It was clearly rape, even if there wasn't any penetration. And since I'm not interested enough in Satou and Uenoyama's relationship to keep watching just for them... droooop.
