167) I'm not a big fan of Kataang, either, though I admit I find myself getting drawn into threads about it here sometimes. Sometimes the things people say in secrets are so irritating/offensive/brain-destroying that I CANNOT HELP MYSELF, though you're right that we should try not to be smug assholes about it, however ridiculous the secret in question may be.

I've been thinking lately that we all need to just...I don't know. Forgive each other? There's so much bad blood in Avatar fandom that's been going on for so long, and I'm sure to outsiders it looks like we're ALL being assholes. But you know...yeah. The cycle has to end somewhere. Hopefully enough of us will learn to move past it that we can finally all get along to some extent again.

The thing is the smug assholery is not limited to one segment. Every side has it, every side tries to one up each other.

I think that if everyone could just say: "You like that? That's okay" without all of the name calling, ship bashing, character bashing, etc. the world would be a good place.

I don't think anyone really has a problem with someone liking one thing over the other. I think it is the lording over and superiority complexes and making others feel bad for enjoying what they like by degrading it is where we get into trouble and is when the claws come out. And that is all sides of the fandom.

No, it's not. I think that there just happen to be a few people who are VERY LOUD about it, but yes, every group has its dickery! I try to have a live-and-let-live attitude, but it's hard to not call people out when they're behaving badly.

It's a circle of ugly. One side responds to the other side which then responds back and so on and so far. And the unpleasantness grows. And neither side is willing to step in and stop it.

I think the Anon on page 2 hit the nail on the head. Both sides insult each other putting the other side on the defense, and people very rarely make good decisions or say nice things when they feel insulted or condescended to.

But then again Avatar fandom is not unique, it is not the first and it won't be the last, it is growing pains and when the fandom gets older and well smaller the crazy will die down and people will be more accepting, the problem is that the craziness also tends to surround the most productive times of a fandom.

I will full admit that this is a lot of why I hang out with the slashers to much -- they tend to be more laid back, and the demo skews older. Also, in Avatar fandom, there are like TEN of us and so we sort of have to learn to get along with each other ^_^;;;

Your lucky to have never been in a fandom where the ships wars were between the slash and the het ships. My first fandom I was called a homophobic cunt because how dare I pair a boy with OH MY GOD a girl!

I think the fact that Avatar slash fandom is small has more to do with the insanity than the fact that it is slash. Because lord knows slashers are not free of the crazy.

Hahaha well, the slashers I know are a pretty cool bunch overall. There are crazies, of course, but we all get along -- actually, it's one of the few places where Zuko/Katara shippers mix with the rest of fandom without their being a lot of drama. :D

If it wasn't so much that I would rather have women in my stories, I would totally join the fandom, as it stands boyslash does absolutely nothing for me.

Dude, PLEASE COME WRITE SOME FEMSLASH! There isn't nearly enough of it!
