176. I completely get where you're coming from, and I'm not homophobic. Mostly my disdain for non-canon gay couples (like House x Wilson), is because I'm upset that these fans can't appreciate that maybe their relationship is much more interesting and deep when it's platonic. If their mind can only jump to the conclusion that these good, straight friends need to jump in bed together, they're doin' it wrong. =P Romantic relationships change peoples' chemistry, and I like House and Wilson as friends.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)No, just no. Just stop talking right there because you're sounding incredibly ignorant right now. How said that they didn't appreciate their relationship as it is? Hell, for most it is the reason they ship them. And no, just because it's best for you doesn't mean the right way. It just work for you and it doesn't make you better than someone shipping them. And shipping them isn't all about the porn for most either, dear god.
And a good romantic relationship is built on a foundation of friendship and trust. Relationships regardless of it's romantic or not do change, as we're witnessing this season between them, anyway.
And this is written by a person who likes them as friends and doesn't ship them. And why emphasize that they're straight and why non-canon gay pairing bother you more? You should be just as bothered as lesbian and het non-canon couples as well, and I hope you do.

What about non-canon straight couples?
I think a lot of reaction to this secret is that the OP and his/her defenders keep talking about fans pairing non-canon gay (usually m/m) couples, and are ignoring the fact that people do this as much, if not more, with non-canon straight couples. Where are the people getting butthurt over that? Imagine this:
"Romantic relationships change peoples' chemistry, and I like Wilson and Cuddy as friends."
It's that people are acting as if slash fans are the only people who make up crazy pairings, when that's so, SO not true.
no subject
Yep, and then there's the entire misconception that any non-canon pairing must be crazy. I understand that there are non-canon pairings that do not compute when thought out, but some can work based on the characters' personality and circumstance. If a shipper can plausibly get A and B together in an in-character way, I see nothing "idiotic" about the pairing. Some people just wonder what would happen between characters in a given situation. Or they feel that A and B would make a great couple if their preferences swung a certain way and they had the opportunity to become more than friends.
no subject
Exactly.
But also it makes me wonder--why does it bother anybody when people ship a couple? House/Wilson as a romantic coupld *is* different than them as a friendship. So is Zutara or Harry/Hermione. But it's not like somebody shipping something themselves changes what's actually in canon, so why does it bother somebody that other people want to play around with adding sex to it? Sometimes slash and romantic stories focus more on the dynamics of the relationship using sex and it's interesting. I feel like I've gotten a lot of meta on the non-sexual canon Frodo/Sam by reading slash, for instance.
I mean, I can get if somebody is frustrated if people are talking about canon and people act like "they're doing it!" explains everything. That can get stupid, like where people will say "He looked at her! He must want to sleep with her! There's no other explanation!" when actually in canon he looked at her because he knows she committed murder or something. But that's different than just shipping outside of canon.

Sometimes it's just a TAKE BACK WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THOR emotional response. This is why I dislike pairings that require my favorite characters to be blatantly OOC. I know that it's not going to wreck canon or whatnot, and it's definitely not worth starting wank over. I just find it annoying, especially because a lot of those OOC pairings are based on common misconceptions about men. (e.g. guys think with their crotches and, given an excuse, will hook up with anyone regardless of whether they're still mourning their dead wife, their personalities are fundamentally incompatible, etc.)

I'm willing to bet you're fine with non-canon het couples.

I think exploring a romantic relationship in fanfic is just like exploring any other type of possible character development.

To you, it is. And you're assuming that people don't appreciate their relationship as friends. For the most part, the relationship between characters, whether it's as friends or rivals or enemies or whatever, is what is so amazing and intriguing that we start shipping them. And for a lot of us, liking slash of characters DOES NOT negate the fact that we also like gen of them, or fics of them with other people, or just fics where they're being BFFs. Liking one thing does not immediately mean you are incapable of liking the other.
If their mind can only jump to the conclusion that these good, straight friends need to jump in bed together, they're doin' it wrong.
Well, for one thing, bisexuality exists, and unless a character's sexuality is made a major plot point and important to their character, you can't actually say a character's sexuality is one thing or another. A male being attracted to a female or females doesn't mean he will only be attracted to females for his entire life. Same goes the other way around.
That's not really the point though, and mostly I'm just wanting to point out that, no, just liking something that you personally don't like is (for reasons explained above and below) not "doin' it wrong."
Romantic relationships change peoples' chemistry, and I like House and Wilson as friends.
And that's you. Personally, I ship pretty much every character with each other (and I'm not even joking or exaggerating) exactly because of the reason you apparently don't. I love the canon relationships given for them. I also love exploring the friendships and honorary-family-ness that may not get touched on in canon. I also love shipping the characters, because I find it interesting exploring how their chemistry changes, and playing around with that.
My preference is not the same as yours, but that doesn't mean you're right and I'm wrong, or that you're wrong and I'm right. If you prefer the friendship, fantastic. But what we like is just our preference, and is no reason for anyone to look down on us. It's fandom, it's fiction, it's silly. And people need to lighten up. What's it matter, anyway?

Slash is something I read and write, it's not the only thing I read and write ;)

And actually, when I do ship male couples, I'm usually interested in the relationship more for the intellectual and emotional aspect than just pure buttsex.
