I will put my hand up, I was defensive over the MCU for years but two-three hours at a time every year or two is just not enough time to develop some of the "so complex" plots and character development that I see other fans praising the franchise about. Phase 3 completely turned me into a "complex plots and character development...where?" person.

What's tragic is that a lot of the not-main characters could have had interesting back stories turned into future stories, but they became slaves to a plot that served around only three of the actual main characters. Even some of the allegedly main characters suffered this! I long for the days that I had naive hope that the MCU would be different to all the other multi-character franchises.

nayrt but yes to all of this. The movies are so big, so focused on the action and hitting a few major plot points that characterization is a super low priority. There's no way to do otherwise if a minor character only gets a handful of lines per movie, and most of them not terribly significant ones, either.

I was probably doing it wrong but my investment in the MCU really was mostly due to how characters related and interacted with one another. It was the promise of that keeping me around. It's no surprise I'm essentially mentally checked out now...

Case in point I don't care if it's cheesy, I was a sucker for "happy families with occasional angst and action" post Avengers (2012) fic.

Weren't you only in it for Loki? And not even Taika!Loki at that? Yeah no, that ship sailed after the snoozefest that was The Dark World.
