[Great British Bake Off, series 10]

They're SO bad. The sketches, I mean. I don't even mind Sandi and Noel but the sketches... they need to stop. GBBO does not need that much schtick.

Also, they need more moments where they're actively rooting for and encouraging the bakers, that's a crucial aspect for me and they don't do enough of it.

I think that's probably because Noel, bless his adorable goth heart, just ends up bemusing or creeping them out rather than comforting them.

It's become clear how much Mel and Sue brought to the show.

It's true. But you can't go back to the past and I still think the show is really good.

I do wonder, if you're going to have a weirdo like Noel as one of the hosts - a wonderful and lovable weirdo, but a weirdo - maybe you need someone with a different vibe than Sandi to complement him.

I don't watch GBBO but I've always found this kind of thing complete cringe. It doesn't matter what show it is or how serious/not serious the show is trying to be...there's something about people who aren't actors (or even sometimes people who are) doing these skits that sets off my "I need to look away NOW" reflex.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-15 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the new season yet, but I absolutely agree that their skits are at best awkward & at worst actually cringe-worthy. I don't hate them as hosts, they're fine. But Mel & Sue were so much better. They were more enjoyable to watch & they always seemed so INTO what the bakers were doing & they were right on top of encouraging people who were having problems & making them smile. I feel like Noel & Sandi aren't as good at that part of it & that's a shame.

Agreed. I feel like Mel and Sue were much, much better at giving emotional support to the bakers and keeping the atmosphere light. Sandi and Noel are funny and I love them, but they don't do that. It's not just about cracking jokes and being quirky... GBBO has lost a lot of its sweet, heartfelt vibe.

Definitely not all of it, though.

That's one of the things I've loved about this season so far actually - all of the contestants are doing amazing at supporting each other.

I miss Mel and Sue. I tried to give Noel and Sandi a chance but they don't do a thing for me.

I honestly could not disagree more with OP. I'm not saying they aren't entitled to that opinion, because I think the sketches ARE cringy but, to me, it just feels totally deliberate. The sketches are so kitschy and awful and that's the whole vibe to the 'comedy' side of the show, and I love it - I love Extra Slice too, which also has that vibe I think. It's hilarious. Like when they had Flo (older female contestant) rapping for example. And Tom Allen using a fucking whisk for a microphone <3 Brilliant. It's just meant to be very tongue in cheek and very British and I think it's great.

I think the sketches are supposed to be corny, not awful. I'm pretty sure they're not deliberately trying to be this cringe worthy.

Stuff like this wouldn't be so bad except that they drag it out far too long and it gets weird. :(

Are you kidding? I was LIVING for that bit. I spent the whole time cackling, and when it was over, I brought it back so I could watch it again. Probably one of my favorite scenes of Bake Off ever.

I agree that the show has changed a lot, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It was a little weird the first season after the cast change, especially since there are definitely a lot more sex related jokes which was a surprise, but I'm just going with it at this point.
