108. There are way worse reasons to want to be a police officer than Vimes. If I wanted to be a cop, my top ten list of reasons would definitely include Vimes and Gordon.

115. I read through the comments on this one and had more of a reaction to those than the actual secret. WOW you guys like to assign extra meanings to this! I don't think the secret maker ever once said that HP doesn't deserve a fandom, or that JKR isn't a good writer.

124. IAWTS. Stalking and obsession = CREEPY. Therefore, stalking + obsession + telling the girl about it = girl running away very very very fast!

127. I'm not a fan of Mylar, but the only Heroes ship I think should really be taken out to be shot behind the chemical sheds is Pylar. Incest FTL! And way to make one of those ships that has NO BASIS IN CANON, guys!

I know, seriously! Sure, the wording is a bit harsh, but I think the secret is just another complaint about an over-hyped series that may be worth some of the praise, but definitely not all. And I know that when I was twelve, I had definitely begun to want something more complex than straight-up Good vs. Evil.

The problem with Harry Potter is the universe's potential - that seems to be the problem with a lot of media with hordes of disappointed fans - the series could have been much better than it ultimately was if JKR had been less attached to the ending she'd envisioned back in the early '90s and instead paid attention to where the story was taking her, as opposed to where she dragged the story, kicking and screaming the whole way.

The gigantic gaps between books four, five, six and seven didn't help matters, either - she lost me as a reader when I aged out of the target between four and five, and I'm sure many other fans grew out of, rather than up with, the stories. Doesn't mean the stories don't have merit, but I don't think they're as universal as its die-hard fans would have the world believe, nor that they will be as lasting as the other stories (Narnia, anyone? Alice in Wonderland? Oz? Peter Pan? the complete works of Roald Dahl?) that have made it into childrens' canon. Potter shows flickers of potential greatness, but it's by no means a masterwork.

Overall, I'd rather read Pratchett or Tolkien or watch Star Wars (again) than drag myself through the last three Harry Potter bricks.

I think Goblet of Fire is where it started to go downhill. I liked that book, but then Order of the Phoenix was just awful and Half-Blood Prince wasn't much better. I think I can safely attribute my loss of interest in the series to those books. Deathly Hallows wasn't as bad as five and six, but do not get me started on the ending. Just don't.
And yeah, they're definitely not very universal. They were written by a Western author for a Western audience, both of whom are familiar with the classic hero-from-humble-beginnings-saves-the-world formula that might not be so common in the rest of the world. I'm amazed that the books got translated into as many languages as they did.

I too, grew out of the series rather quickly because Harry doesn't really seem to age or grow or change very much at all, and neither do his partners in crime. But something like Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic series is one of those that has books for pre-teens, teens, and even older. Melting Stones and The Will of the Empress in particular have some very dark undertones, what with all the hints at what Briar, Rosethorn, and Evvy go through, as well as sexuality issues and the difficulties that are part of reuniting with friends long sundered.
I think a lot of Harry Potter fans are missing out on brilliant series like that because they think "oh, nothing will ever be as good as Harry Potter; I know this because 50 million other fans my age say so."
