115. As far as LOLWITCHESCASTMAGIC goes, I have yet to read much better. Usually, fantasy books focused around sorcery are boring. I salute Harry Potter for actually keeping my attention and not being overly descriptive, boring and taking-itself-too-seriously like most books of the fantasy/magic genre. And no, I don't have the attention span of a small child, but after reading flowery word number SEVENTY FOUR one would hope I could be forgiven for rolling my eyes right out of my sockets.

As far as LOLWITCHESCASTMAGIC books go, I'll take Harry Dresden over Harry Potter hands down - although they're very different books with a very different target audience and I definitely wouldn't read Dresden to my hypothetical seven-year-old. (I'd read Potter, and they'd get the grittier stuff as teens. Assuming they didn't sneak the books before, in which case, well, nobody's ever been psychologically damaged by reading gritty books a wee bit too early.)

I am with you on the flowery description, and that's actually one of the things that turns me off of HP; I thought its description was unnecessarily heavy handed and clunky-bordering-on-purple.

Well I don't really consider Dresden and Potter in the same genre, if that makes sense? Dresden is more crime/mystery with magic thrown in, and I very much love his books (far more than Harry Potter), but Harry is a teenager doing teenagery things in a world that's focused about magic and sorcery.

So I do take into account the target audience as well.

But the flowery description? I've read so, so much worse. So that's probably why I can take HP without too much complaint.

If I had to categorize them, I'd take Potter out of fantasy altogether and put him into "boarding school fiction" - the world always felt to me as if the magic was incidental, and that the story itself was much more of a teenagery adventure store with added romantic subplot. He could just as easily be fighting nazis or the spanish inquisition* as death eaters.

Dresden on the other hand I would place firmly into urban fantasy - the detective story feels incidental to the universe; Dresden could be a construction worker and the magic in the universe would still keep it firmly planted in fantasyland.

(Both are, to me, ultimately wizard stories - stories about wizards doing magical things to thwart evil. Your mileage, of course, may vary.)

ETA: love your icon. I haven't played portal yet, but that's only because my physics-stupid brain fears trying to get through it on PC. It is highly placed on my bucket list.

*I am sure no one saw that coming :)
