While I used to feel this exact same sentiment, I realize now (as my own interests shift) that people's experiences feed into their tastes and then therefore reflect on the media they consume. So when people 'see a ship' in something, it's inevitably saying more about their own world view/experience than the subject. You can't take it personally.

I'm bi, and so many things that come off as 'just friends' to many other people have twinges of things that I personally would experience differently. I've had many friend crushes. It really depends on where someone is coming from.
