Western fans need to stop putting Japanese fandom on a pedestal. It only looks better to them because they only know of it from the outside. And why don't they see the unfortunate implications of talking up how much more "respectful" Japanese fans are? (Mind you, this is a place where fans videotaped themselves destroying merchandise because they didn't like the direction a franchise took or something innocuous that a creator did.)

As someone that has one foot in both ponds (both ethnically and locationally!), I can see why people think that, though. It's a different beast altogether. Both sides have their pros and cons, but I will say that JP fandom has sort of... not forgotten the lost art of staying in one's lane, if that makes sense? There aren't so much "ship wars" as there are just people who have their preferred ship and run with their tribe on it. Of course there's grumbling, but no one attacks each other over it.

I imagine what people mean when they say that it's more respectful is that fans are rarely open assholes to other fans like you see in Western fandoms. And for better or worse, the entire concept of witch hunting/"calling out" someone over some perceived moral error is completely alien to them. It's pretty much anything goes.

That said, there are of course downsides, such as the quiet shunning you'll usually get if you ship a ship as "reverse"/switching (especially if you tag it in the wrong "direction"), and there are definitely a good number of JP fans who think it's cringe-y as fuck that some Western fans suck up to them. And of course Western fandom isn't all bad either; there's way more interaction across the entire board of a fandom instead of just your "tribe", which is really nice, and Western fans do tend to have more of a "go get 'em" attitude towards making their own events and compilations and such without necessarily waiting for it to be sanctioned.

In any case, I don't think anyone is wrong. I definitely see why some Western fans lean more to the Japanese style of fandom; it's a different fit and maybe it works better. I think it's nice that the bridges are slowly being built, honestly. There's more interaction between our "sides" now than there ever has been before, and I think that's really nice.

Pretty much all of this.
Also, if you really want wars over ships and between fandoms outside of the Western side of things: Chinese fandom. It's... brutal.
