Well, I think in can be neither, though? We don't have to assume all characters are straight just because they aren't explicitly written as gay. I think there's usually plenty of room in most text for bisexuality, for instance. Whether or not it was the author's intention is another matter - who knows, and more importantly, who cares, since the text is the text is the text.

I just mean, I don't like either train of thought. No one should assume or insist either way, people should be allowed their own headcanons and shouldn't decide their way is the only way, unless the text clearly supports that.
