Petty gripes

A fandom staple fic is extremely well-written, is listed on tvtropes but has concepts that squick me. I write fic without those squicky concepts, and rec other fics without them but that fandom staple fic is still out there being popular and well-written.

You should have to tag your fic if it's first-person (aka worst POV ever) so I can avoid it.

Yes. Though, this reminds me that one of my small fandom's most prolific writer only writes in first person. ;_;

Only if you should also have to tag for third IMO.

Third person is like...99% of fics. Just like an E-rating makes you know there is likely sex, the fact you are reading a fic means it is likely third person.

I have no idea what peoples' problem with 1st person is (in itself)

I enjoy first person, but not in fic. It just feels weird to me. When I’m reading a book, my enjoyment of first person perspective really depends on how engrossing the character’s thoughts are.

For me (can't speak for everyone), it's that it then becomes the opposite of immersive for me, which is what I enjoy about reading. I don't care about 'me' the vampire eating souffles and being cranky. I want to read about Betty or Alfred fighting their garlic addiction.

In fic it's a 100% nope for me. In published fiction it's the very rare book in first person I can enjoy. It has to be well written enough that I can overlook that POV.

See, I don't understand this at all, personally. I would have that issue if it was second person (which I legit cannot read, fic or published fiction), but first person is like reading the character's diary. I don't feel as though it's supposed to be "me" at all.

Second person would be worse, but really, I (and maybe I don't read as much as I thought) have never seen second person POV outside of you/character fics so it's pretty easy to avoid for me.

NAYRT: Good second person usually works as a hybrid of first person. "Let me tell you a story about myself."

it's there to annoy you.

Sounds like it's popular at least in part because of those squicky concepts.

I'm an idiot who was making a pasta sauce but forgot that the tomatoes I added would release liquid so my sauce ended up way soupier than I wanted

such a rookie mistake...

still mad a lot of what I added to tv tropes got edited out.

Based on the thread below

There's no such thing as a song without words. A song needs words in order to be a song... to be, you know, sung. If it doesn't have words, it's called a musical piece, or just "music without words." I don't expect most people to care, but it's such a common mistake that I cringe when I see.

What does it matter?

NAYRT Well it makes the person writing it look stupid as fuck. But then so does asking 'what does it matter' on a Petty Gripes thread.

da

So does throwing insults at people who only asked to be educated on a subject. Not to mention, it makes you look like an asshole.

I'm over the character x/reader fanfics in my fandom. It wouldn't bother me so much if I could just filter them out but there are practically 15+ different characters people write reader inserts for and they never tag their stuff uniformly and it's just ugh.
