I don't get either side tbh. She's just a random throwaway character.

That said, I'll take rabid fans over rabid haters any day.

I liked her but I'm totally willing to acknowledge it's basically a bit part and leave it at that. What really pisses me off is people acting like she was selfish, a terrible person, etc.

I can’t believe she has haters and lovers willing to dissect her character so much. She’s like you said, a bit part meant to die. I don’t think the writers put any thought into her at all outside of generic friend to die. I mean it shows in how much Nancy or Barb’s parents DGAF about her until season 2 with the fan push back.

Nancy was absolutely stressing about her in season 1, though. That was like...Nancy's whole motivation for getting involved in the plot. Her love triangle bs happened BECAUSE she was looking for and stressed about Barb--Jonathan happened to have information she needed, while Steven couldn't be bothered, so she started working with him instead. And the whole fight with her mom about her sex life doesn't actually matter at all because her best friend is missing and nobody else seemed to care.

This!

And I don't remember seeing Barb's parents much in season 1, they didn't focus on them, so saying they 'didn't give a fuck' seems pretty weird.

Her parents were rarely in it, mostly only mentioned in passing, but they definitely did care. All the lines associated with them was about how worried they were about Barb. It was only a couple of lines, but even in the first season, and even after Nancy moved on, it was always brought up how they were still looking for Barb.

I don't have much in the way of feelings on her because there wasn't a lot to her as a character, she mostly existed to be monster-chow, but I'm not fussed at people loving her either. So long as they're having fun yanno?

Also it was odd that her parents didn't seem to care in s1 all that much, which wasn't helped by them getting no screen-time but still, kinda weird.

I mean, they were told and had evidence that she'd run away from home after a fight with her friend. And, of course, had fuck-all for screen time. I just assumed that offscreen they were following up on what the "police" had told them, ie trying to trace the train she allegedly had taken and all of that, and didn't need to keep dropping back to the D-plot to be assured that Side Character's Background Cast Parents were indeed looking for her while our leads fought literal interdimensional monsters.

For me at least because Nancy was concerned with finding Barb I thought it was a little odd that her parents didn't crop up more as a result, but I do concede that it's because they're non-essential side-characters, the show didn't deem them necessary so they didn't exist more than it felt they needed to.

I just find it weird because... what is there to love? She's barely even a character, she's just a plot device.

The way fandom hyped her up, I was really excited for her... only to be massively disappointed when I actually watched the show and she was pretty much a non-entity.

Are you new to the concept of fandom? Hyper focusing on minor characters who barely have a presence in the canon and imbuing them with a whole personality and inner life is common as dirt.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Where would we be without fandom latching onto the most trivial crap and dialing it up to the max these days?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Like how is that idea not familiar to the point of cliché if you're even a little bit aware of fandom?

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
it is? i've never seen that in any of my fandoms before. if anything, it's the other way around: everyone forgets that the minor characters even exist, which is frustrating if you happen to like those characters.

I guess the difference here then is that I didn't see any fandom chatter before watching the show. I went in blind and thus had no preconceived notions about any of it, so I had no expectations about her character or any of them. As a result I thought she was fine if nothing more than monster-fodder.

Honestly it's one of the reasons I really, really do my best to ignore any kind of hype/hatred about something before I see something myself, because the reality of it(especially concerning fandom) is not going to necessarily match up imo.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me what fandoms you're in where people don't occasionally make a big deal over minor characters or stuff that barely got any attention in canon. Do the people in your other fandoms never, IDK, ship two characters who barely spoke to one another? Stan for a character who seems kind of shitty? I'm just curious why you haven't been exposed to this before Barb came along.

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Barbs great, and it's not that weird to think that if some kid has been trapped in the upsidedown for so long, Barb might have a shot at living too.
