Stuff that was supposed to be scary, but wasn't...

... and stuff that wasn't supposed to be scary, but frightened you. Tell us!

I forget the title of the novel and the name of the author but back in the 90's this book I read was supposed to be scary (it was about a boys' private school) and was even recommended by Stephen King and it was just dull. The closest it got to being scary was one kid was named Howard Stern.

I didn't think The Ring was scary at all.

I was 11 when it came out and I still want to die when I even think about it a little bit.

NAYRT - Yeah, I find it really scary, too. I mean, the inescapability of it, plus our houses are full of screens so it's way too easy to imagine. That brief moment where they find the girl terrified to death in the closet has always stuck with me, to the point that I'm still afraid to watch that part.

It wasn't scary to me at all. The actual clown was mostly just goofy.

What wasn't scary to you?

(I crack myself up)

It didn't scare me either, but I've never been afraid of clowns. My sister's terrified of clowns and the movie scared her a bit.

Pretty much everything billed as horror.

Look, I'm not fearless. There are things in media that freak me out, It's just that there's never been anything in the horror genre that scares me.

Same. At most, certain types of horror tend to gross me out, but not really scare me.

Yep. The one and only "horror" thing that has genuinely creeped me out was PT and to this day I'm still salty as fuck that the game got cancelled because I have NEVER been as unsettled by a piece of media as I was by that.

Let's just say I don't think I was supposed to LMAO at The Pyramid.

Any giant spider. CGI, puppet, whatever. The just aren't scary to me - sometimes they are laughable, sometimes they are cringe-worthy, sometimes just puzzling. They just never look real or move that realistically to me.

Just about everything, TBH. I just don't find fiction scary most of the time.

I played the Hallowed Hallows Headhunters DLC for Borderlands 2 and was spooked by it, also theres this campfire channel that is literally just footage campfire in the woods and it totally creeps me out,.. But then again I'm a wuss.
(there have been horror movies that don't scare me, but those range from old horror movies to body horror flicks)

A lot of these pixelish indie horror games that people keep freaking out about. Pixel graphics just aren't scary to me, no matter how many jumpscares you throw in it.

Now strangely enough, I was a bit creeped out while playing Houseflipper, of all games. It's just such a silent, creepily empty atmosphere, I keep expecting a horde of Zombies to pop up or something. (Though ghosts and stuff would be creepier. I don't find zombies all that creepy, just gross.)

Meant to be scary, but not: The original illustrations to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - except for the one with the spiders in the woman’s face (that got me pretty good, too), I remember thinking as a kid that they were trying a bit too hard.

Not meant to be scary, but was: a how-to cartooning book my dad had. There was a page of caricatures of different sizes, and one of the largest was a woman’s face that was exaggerated to resemble an ostrich, staring straight ahead with a huge toothless smile. That haunts me...

(There was also a ‘50s-styled kid that was almost all giant teeth and his eyes hidden under a cap that gave me chills at first, but for some reason, I was able to talk myself into being ok with that one. But never the ostrich-face woman.)

I loved the illustrations in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but I can’t remember if I found any of them scary. I just thought they were really cool-looking because they looked so different from the illustrations in other books.
