Parasocial Relationships

(Anonymous) 2019-09-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you worry at all about so-called "parasocial relationships" (IE, the kind of one-sided relationship that exists between a creator of content and a consumer of that content)? Do you think it's OK to have crushes on Youtubers?

Not at all. Celeb crushes have existed from the dawn of media. The only thing that's changed here is the form of media. It's perfectly normal.

I didn't even know that some people considered it weird to have crushed on celebrities.

I know for a fact that some people do, I've gotten shit for it lots of times.

nayrt but IME there are people who pretend that they think this is weird. Creepy, even. But personally, I think they're trying to appear super tumblr-woke by acting like thoughtcrimes are a real thing.

I don't generally worry about them? Crushes on Youtubers are fine, I think?

The problem comes from people with terrible boundaries. Celebs have people/resources to help protect them from this. The average person doesn't have as many options if someone gets obsessed/creepy with them and that DOES concern me.

Yeah, they're fine. People have had crushes on celebrities for millennia. It's only a problem when you show up to their house uninvited.

Though I think it's tougher now because a lot of e-celebrities don't have PR teams and there's more direct fan involvement.

Celeb crushes, sure.

I don't get the YouTube thing though.

Enh, they're the new flavour of celeb so I get it. They're also probably more 'approachable' than your garden variety actor/singer/whatever so people find it easier to crush on them as if they were someone you could bump into on the street.

If having a crush on a YouTuber isn't like having a crush on a celebrity, it's at least like having one on a popular person at school who you see around all the time but never talk to. And that's pretty standard too.

But they're all dumb dorks with bad production, and even less watchable than a network talking head trying to fill airtime with fake concern.

If I really wanted to watch a person incoherently mumble about irrelevant shit I can just go to the city park.

I don’t think having a crush on anyone is wrong, but depending on what people do about/to their crushes, it can get creepy. Don’t insult their spouse or S.O. for the crime of not appreciating your crush like you do, accuse their spouse of being an actor hired by a studio, send their spouse death threats, stalk their non-famous spouse or kids’ social media for clues about their private lives...

Basically, saying “wow so and so is so hot, my panties spontaneously combusted” on a random forum is fine, buying a poster of your crush is fine, commenting to say you loved their latest video/podcast episode/photoshoot/etc is fine. Being a stalking creep, not so much.

I think it's fine as long as both parties respect the boundaries there.

I don't think it's okay for people to stalk or harass anyone even if that person is famous.

And I think it's gross to dm young impressionable fans for nudes. Don't even get me started on pedo guy from that band that time.

It's one thing to have a crush on a celebrity, it's another thing to become obsessed with them/start stalking behavior. As long as you're respecting their boundaries there's no problem.

Just as long as the Youtuber isn't ProJared.
