It's more frustrating to me because it feels like it's one of the only frameworks that Hollywood has access to right now, or one of the only kinds of stories about women (esp historical women) that Hollywood is interested in telling. It's very frustrating, very silly, very limiting, and a really bad fit for many historical figures. If it was one or two things doing the whole Rebellious Sexy Feminist Queen, it wouldn't be as bad.

Yeah, it sometimes feels like the people who write these movies think that a story about a historical woman is not worth telling unless you can shoehorn a "spunky feminist" plot into it somehow.
