I feel like some of this has shifted over time. When I was a teen (I'm in my forties now) if we wanted people to go away we'd tell them to drop dead or go die and mean it just as a 'go the fuck away' 'get lost'.

Nowadays it does feel like people use it more as literally wishing people dead rather than hyperbolically.
